Learning Assistance Specialist

Loyola Marymount University ’s Learning Resource Center (LRC) has an opening for a Learning Assistance Specialist.  This position will provide group and individual instruction in the field of business.  This individual will develop, coordinate and support supplemental instruction and other collaborative group learning programs and interact and collaborate with department administrators/faculty throughout LMU in order to ensure quality management of these programs.

Develop new programs which encourage various academic competencies among LMU students; and assist with database management and/or evaluation of various academic support programs.   The individual will provide group and individual instruction in study and learning skills areas.  Recruit, train, evaluate, and on occasion discharge graduate and undergraduate students who work as supplemental instruction leaders and tutors in various programs offered by the LRC and design instructional materials for these programs. 

Other responsibilities include providing information technology support, updating, revising and expanding the LRC and Disability Support Services Office websites.

We seek candidates with a Bachelor of Science in Business or a related field.   A Master’s degree in Education, Psychology or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is highly desirable.  The candidate should also have a minimum of three years experience teaching at the secondary or collegiate level .   Experience in a college or university writing and/or learning center is preferred.  The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Excel.

The Disability Resource Center at California State Polytechnic University , Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a Learning Disability/Mental Health Specialist . This is a full-time tenure-track faculty counselor position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin December 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Position:
The Learning Disabilities/Mental Health Specialist provides disability-related counseling services and consultative assistance with the focus on the integration and inclusion of students with disabilities into curricular and co-curricular university programs and services. Major responsibilities include:

Counseling Competence (70%)

  • Clinical assessment and intake evaluation
  • Review of documentation for attention , learning , cognitive , psychological and medical conditions
  • Prescription of individualized services and accommodations
  • Disability-related counseling , e.g. self-acceptance , impact on academic and occupational issues , social relations , learning and organizational strategies
  • Appropriate referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources
  • Mental health consultation and crisis intervention
  • Case management , documentation and record keeping
  • Consultation and coordination with faculty , staff , and other departments , e.g. negotiating specific accommodations , resolving academic difficulties or evaluating academic exceptions

Administrative Coordination (20%)

  • Coordination of clinical services and overall case management for the DRC department
  • Leadership to DRC Counseling Team including policy and program development and facilitation of case counseling meetings
  • Oversight and maintenance of student records , including the documentation of student contacts
  • Authoring of reports , grant proposals , or other documents pertaining to the DRC department mission or operation
  • Professional development seminars or training to DRC staff and faculty on clinical issues or treatment innovations
  • DRC Representative on various committees
  • Conduct research and program evaluation
  • Training and clinical case management for learning disability/counseling interns as appropriate in the future

Outreach and Consultation (10%)

  • Develop information materials related to disability awareness and student success for use in workshops , seminars , and trainings
  • Consultative workshops for the University community regarding the needs of students with disabilities
  • Informational workshops for students on learning strategies and other topics
  • Liaison to departments that interact most frequently with students with disabilities

DRC is a comprehensive program serving 600-700 temporarily and
permanently disabled students, offering specialized services which
include: advisement, campus orientation, disability management,
alternative media, on-campus transportation, special parking permits,
