Scholarship Info at CAPED:
Susan Bunch
Scholarship
On July 24th,
1994, loving friends of Susan Bunch gathered in Aptos, CA to celebrate
her life and mourn her passing after her valiant battle with cancer.
Susan died peacefully at home on July 18th, 1994. She had recently
returned with Elaine Alster (MA, '77) from a trip to Africa, a long-time
wish which she fulfilled despite the physical limitations placed
upon her by her last illness.
Susan received her Masters Degree in Special Education from Santa Clara University
in 1978 and became a prime mover in the California Association for Postsecondary
Education of the Disabled (CAPED) fighting for the rights of learning disabled
(LD) students and working towards improved services to this population. She
was honored with the CAPED President's Award for Leadership in Legislation
in 1984.
Susan developed the LD Program at Gavilan College and subsequently joined the
West Valley College faculty where she worked with LD students and taught writing
skills. In a memorial gathering at West Valley, she was praised in moving eulogies
by both students and faculty for her energy, her excellence in teaching and
the empathic support she offered her students. She was a consummate professional
always willing to give of herself in service to her students.
After the onset of her illness, Susan became an active proponent of The Women's
Cancer Support Group in Santa Cruz, CA and organized fund raising activities
to benefit the organization. She worked long and hard in the fight against
cancer and was courageous to the last in her personal battle with the disease.
Scholarships in Susan's memory have been established through CAPED and West
Valley College. Interested persons may contact Bonnie Clark (MA, '78, MA, '88)
at Evergreen Valley College, San Jose, CA for further details.
She will be missed.
