CAPED 2009

Welcome to San Diego!

The group from the San Diego area has put on multiple CAPED conventions and always does a great job, so you know this year’s convention will be exemplary as well. This year’s theme is “Mission Possible: Universal Design”. Many of you have heard me say that I feel universal design, and specifically universal learning design, could be the biggest contribution our profession makes to the larger field of education. I think this year’s convention is another step toward showing people how to design buildings, grounds, classrooms, and instruction so that everyone has the best chance of fully using and benefitting from the services and instruction offered by our colleges and universities, whether they have a disability or not. If we design things to be as inclusive as possible, we won’t have to make adjustments and modifications after-the-fact or for individuals as often as we have in the past.

If you are here at the convention then you have already shown you have a “mission possible” attitude by attending even during uncertain budget times. I applaud your ingenuity, or persistence, or persuasiveness, or whatever it is that got you here. Enjoy the interaction with your colleagues, and have an outstanding convention!

Scott Hamilton
CAPED President
